MEGA VS ONEDRIVE
Switch to MEGA: the best OneDrive alternative for private cloud storage
MEGA is a privacy-first OneDrive alternative with zero-knowledge encryption, trusted by over 300 million users worldwide. Store, share, and back up your data with cloud storage that keeps your content private by default.

Why people switch from OneDrive
Privacy built in
Your files are encrypted before they leave your device, and only you hold the keys. OneDrive encrypts your files too, but Microsoft manages the keys and can access your content.
If privacy is your priority, MEGA builds it in from the start.
20 GB free to start
MEGA gives you 20 GB free, compared with OneDrive‘s 5 GB. You can move far more of your files across before you ever think about upgrading.
When you need more, plans scale to 20 TB.
More than storage
MEGA isn‘t just a place to keep files. A VPN and password manager are built in, so your storage, browsing, and logins are protected together.
No extra add-ons, no separate subscriptions.

How we compared: Figures are based on official Microsoft and MEGA documentation and current published pricing, checked in June 2026. Where a plan or price changes, we update this page and the date above.
Note: OneDrive has no standalone plan. Storage is sold only inside a Microsoft 365 subscription, which also bundles the Office apps and Microsoft Defender.
MEGA can‘t read your files. Neither can anyone else
End-to-end encryption, by default
MEGA encrypts your files on your device before they‘re uploaded. Only you hold the decryption keys. OneDrive encrypts files too but Microsoft holds the keys. That means Microsoft can access your content for AI features, legal requests, or policy enforcement. With MEGA, that is technically impossible.
Your files don‘t feed any AI
Microsoft Copilot draws on the files in your OneDrive to power suggestions across Microsoft 365. Because MEGA uses zero-knowledge encryption, your content is never readable by MEGA or any third party including AI systems.
Personal Vault is not zero-knowledge
OneDrive‘s Personal Vault is marketed as extra protection, but Microsoft still holds the encryption keys. Free and 100 GB plans limit the vault to three files. MEGA encrypts your entire account by default.
Storage that scales past Microsoft‘s 1 TB ceiling
Four times more free storage, and room to grow
MEGA gives you 20 GB free versus OneDrive‘s 5 GB. When you need more, MEGA plans scale up to 20 TB with pay-per-TB pricing. OneDrive personal plans top out at 1 TB. There is no 2 TB or 3 TB personal option.
No per-file size limit
MEGA imposes no fixed per-file upload limit beyond your plan‘s total capacity. OneDrive caps individual files at 250 GB.
More recovery for your storage plan
60 days vs 30
MEGA Rewind lets you restore your deleted data to any point in the last 60 days. OneDrive‘s Files Restore offers a 30-day window.
More file version history
MEGA stores up to 100 versions of each file. OneDrive personal plans store up to 25 versions per file. If you make frequent edits or collaborate across devices, MEGA gives you a longer history to fall back on.
The privacy tools Microsoft charges separately for
VPN included, no add-on needed
MEGA VPN is included with paid storage plans. Microsoft retired its Defender VPN for individuals in February 2025, so a Microsoft 365 subscription no longer includes a VPN at all.
Password manager included
MEGA Pass is a full zero-knowledge password manager, included in your plan. Microsoft does not offer a standalone password manager for consumers.
Encrypted chat and meetings built in
MEGA includes end-to-end encrypted chat and video calls. Microsoft Teams supports E2EE for one-to-one calls only. Group call encryption requires a Teams Premium add-on, billed per user per month.

It depends on your priorities, but MEGA, Google Drive, pCloud, and Sync are common choices. MEGA stands out for combining zero-knowledge encryption, 20 GB free storage, no per-file size limit, and native Linux support, features most alternatives don‘t offer together.
No. OneDrive encrypts files at rest with AES-256, but Microsoft holds the keys and can access your content. MEGA encrypts files on your device before upload, so only you can read them.
Personal Vault adds an extra sign-in step, but it isn‘t zero-knowledge — Microsoft still holds the keys. Free and 100 GB plans also limit the vault to three files. MEGA protects your whole account by default, with no file limit.
MEGA is free with 20 GB and scales to 20 TB from €1.25 per TB a month. OneDrive gives 5 GB free, then sells storage only inside Microsoft 365, from €99/year for 1 TB. For storage alone, MEGA is far better value per TB.
Create a free MEGA account, download your files from OneDrive, and upload them to MEGA, or follow our migration guide. The desktop and mobile apps then keep everything synced.
Yes. You can store and share Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files on MEGA. The one thing OneDrive does that MEGA doesn‘t is real-time co-authoring inside the Office apps. If thats central to your workflow, it‘s worth factoring in.
